Job Fair Preparation Tips

Before heading to the job fair, be sure to complete a full registration in the Employ Florida Marketplace. Your registration includes an online resume that helps employers find you, as well as a Virtual Recruiter that sends you alerts whenever a job you may be interested in becomes available. Research

Do your homework. You can get a huge jump on the competition by getting a list of the companies attending the fair and doing research on each of the companies you want to interview with; you want to target companies that match your skills. We encourage you to visit with each employer to find out what opportunities they might have.

Resumes

Bring plenty of copies of your resume to the Job Fair – you should carry them in a neat folder or portfolio. If you have multiple interests or job objectives, make sure you bring enough of each version of your resume. Please note some employers cannot accept hard copy resumes and will ask you to apply online. This is to comply with federal regulations about the way employers keep data on applicants. This does not mean the employer is giving you the brush-off, and it does not mean the employer is wasting time by attending the fair and talking with you. The recruiter will take note of candidates, in whom they are interested, but they have to follow certain procedures to comply with law. So make sure you follow up after the event and complete the application process online in order to be considered for the position.

Attire

Professional business attire is essential; there are no second chances on first impressions. This is your opportunity to meet with employers who are recruiting for their open positions. Make sure you stand out above the crowd. Employers expect job seekers to present their best when applying for employment. You are selling a total package, not only your abilities. Prepare what to say

You may only have two to five minutes to market yourself and protect yourself from being screened out, so you need to make the most of your time. Take some time and develop a 30-second "commercial" that highlights the key benefits that you can offer the organization, then use it to introduce yourself to employers at the Job Fair. Remember the three keys to making a good impression: make eye contact, offer a firm handshake, and show enthusiasm. You should also prepare answers to interview questions just as you would any employment interview.

The Most Frequently Asked Interview Questions

  1. Can you tell me a little about yourself?
  2. Why are you applying for this type of job and why here?
  3. What kind of training or experience do you have in this field?
  4. What are the greatest strengths you bring to this job?
  5. What is your greatest weakness?
  6. How much do you expect to be paid?
  7. Can you tell me about a problem you had on your previous job and how you handled it?
  8. How can you help us make more money or do better as a whole?
  9. What would you consider to be an ideal job for you?
  10. Can you tell me why you consider yourself a responsible person?
  11. What interests do you have and what activities do you like to do most?
  12. Why should I offer you the job? (This is the most important question of them all.)

Applications

When completing an employer application make sure to use an ink pen (preferably blue ink), follow written instructions carefully, and print neatly and clearly. Be sure to complete the entire application. Come prepared with your previous employer(s) contact information, dates of employment and job duties performed. List your employment in chronological order, making sure to highlight skills and relevant job responsibilities. Pay attention to grammar and make sure to proofread the application for errors before submitting to the employer.

Follow-up

This is key to obtaining that desired position. Most people forget to follow up, but taking this extra step will give you an edge over your competition. When talking to employers at the event, make sure you get their contact information, phone numbers and email address.

  • Call -You will make a good impression by calling the recruiter’s office number the evening of the fair and leaving a voicemail message thanking the recruiter again for his/her time that day.
  • Thank you note - Write a thank you note and mail it the next day to the address on the recruiter's business card. In the letter, thank the recruiter for his/her time, restate your interest and qualifications for the position, reiterate your interest in a second interview, and make a promise to follow-up the letter with a phone call (and then make sure you do in fact call).
